It Takes a Village

The phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” originates from an African proverb. Its meaning is that it takes a lot of people to positively interact with children to provide safe and healthy environments that gives them the security to develop and flourish and realize their potential to attain all their hopes and dreams. The idea is to have support from many people. First, we look to our families for moral support and possibly even financial support. Our families are there for us through all kinds of adversity. The elders in our families are wise and can provide advice to help us through our journeys.

I know a lot of us don’t have family we can turn to for support or don’t have healthy relationships with them. In that case, we create our own families. We encounter so many people on our journey and we make meaningful and lasting connections. This group of created families are the best places to look for support and advice. Don’t be afraid to use their wisdom. You will find the people of your village in family, friends, co-workers, teachers, church communities, neighbors, and other parents.

The village can offer a variety of benefits, such as moral support, transportation help, and different perspectives. Sometimes if we look at things from a different angle, we see that it is not as bad as it seemed. These different points of view can help us find solutions in places we would have never thought to look.

So, go out and develop your village. Even if you start out with just one person, the benefits will be quite rewarding.
